Study areas for this college
The New Zealand Diploma in Costume Construction is the only tertiary course in New Zealand that specialises in costume construction for stage and screen. The course is taught by some of New Zealand’s best industry professionals and aims to provide students with skills in all forms of costume construction and production.
The Bachelor of Design (Stage & Screen) is an intensive practical course covering the essential skills to design set and costume for traditional performance on both the stage and screen, alongside developing critical and ideation skills for work that expands notions of performance in the 21st Century. The course takes up to 12 students a year to ensure high levels of individualised learning and opportunities.
The Bachelor of Performing Arts (Acting) is Aotearoa’s most prestigious actor training course. Running over three years, this intensive degree programme is designed to train a Responsive Actor – an actor who has the courage, skill and flexibility to meet any opportunity as they build a career in our ever-changing arts landscape.
The New Zealand Diploma of Scenic Construction and Properties is a two-year programme that equips students with a comprehensive foundation in constructing sets and properties for the world of live and screen arts.
The Bachelor of Performing Arts (Management) is a rigorous three-year, full-time degree program that provides comprehensive training in arts management. Covering stage and production management, marketing, event management, technical skills, and financial planning, the program prepares students for creative technical, management and leadership roles in the arts sector.

Each student is assigned a personal, state-of-the-art workstation. During your time on campus, you will have access to 4-months of guidance from an industry professional to create and polish your demo reel.

Asset Creation is a term used in the CG industry for the creation of all bits and pieces, both big and small, used in Film and Games. This Asset Creation program is designed to train working artists in the CG Industry for the roles of Props & Environments for Film, Characters & Creatures for Film, Environments for Games as well as Characters & Creatures for Games.

Leimomi Oakes
Senior Tutor | Costume Construction – a Hawaiian-born actress and fashion & textile historian, with a BA from Mills College CA, USA moved to NZ in 2006 where she worked as the Museum of NZ Te Papa Tongarewa as Acquisitions and Loans officer eventually became Curatorial Assistant. She is know for authoring the popular fashion & Textile history blog thedreamstress.com, as well as, designing a pattern line, Scroop patterns, which includes both historical and modern garments.

Dr. Sean Coyle
Head of Department Design & Performing Arts Management – Dr. Sean is a performance designer, photographer, artist and educator. He is originally trained at Toi Whakaari (Technical Production0 and has since completed a Graduate Diploma in Dramatic Arts Design from VCA, an M.A in Art & Design from Auckland University of Technology and a PhD from the School of Creative Arts – University of Tasmania. He has been a designer for theatre and TV through out NZ and Australia for nearly 30 years.

Anya Tate-Manning
Craft & Creative Practice Tutor – an award-winning performer, director and writer, who has worked in the New Zealand Arts Industry for over 15 years. She graduated from the Acting program at Toi Whakaari in 2007, having already studied theatre at Otago University, and has since completed an MA in script writing from the International Institute of Modern Letters at Victoria University. She is tutor of Craft and Creative Practice at Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School.

Dr. Sam Trubridge
Teaching Staff at Toi Whakaari for Bachelor of Design (Stage & Screen) – Sam Trubridge has a PhD in Creative Practice from Massey University College of Creative Arts. He has lectured in Performance Design and Spatial Design at Massey University (NZ) and programmed Massey’s Print Factory Performance Laboratory. He currently directs The Performance Arcade on Wellington Waterfront. In 2021 he initiated a bold new project called WHAT IF THE CITY WAS A THEATRE? involving the Wellington performing arts community working to create a festival of live art and performance across city spaces.
