HMKW University of Applied Sciences for Media, Communication, and Management were founded by an experienced team of Higher Education professionals in 2008. HMKW is a private, state-approved university with institutional accreditation by the German Council of Science and Humanities. All of its degree programs are additionally accredited by FIBAA (international agency for quality assurance in higher education).
HMKW is active at three locations across Germany: Berlin, Cologne, and in Frankfurt (Main).
HMKW takes part in ERASMUS programs and supports student exchanges as well as collaboration with students and universities in Europe and worldwide.

The M.A. Communication Design and Creative Strategies is a future-proof program. It provides key competencies expected from creative heads in management positions, focusing on aesthetic production in advertising, marketing and visual communication. The aim is to master the entire design-oriented process of value creation both in theory and practice.
Our Master’s program ‘M.A. Digital Journalism’ offers the ideal environment to further professionalize your journalistic skills. The course focuses on current trends in the converging areas of print, online and audiovisual media, with a particular emphasis on topics related to culture, entertainment, business, and politics.
In the Visual and Media Anthropology master’s program, practical and theoretical knowledge of film production is imparted in a research context. The focus is on ethnographic films, documentaries, and immersive 360-degree applications. Aspects of experimental and fictional films are also covered in class.
The B.A. Graphic Design and Visual Communication offers a comprehensive and interdisciplinary university education. It provides you with key competencies in all fields of visual communication. With its practical focus the study program makes you fit for your future career in the creative industry.
The master’s program International Marketing and Media Management (M.A.) equips you with the international strategic skills, introduces you to the latest marketing trends and provides you with knowledge of both quantitative and qualitative methodology.
The 2-year consecutive Master’s program M.A. Public Relations and Digital Marketing enables to work professionally in a broad range of new communication fields, which emerge through the digital transformation process of our society and culture. The dynamic progress of media technology has led to a fundamental change of the knowledge and skills which is necessary to compete especially in communication and media-oriented job markets and professional environments.
The Master’s program M.Sc. Business Psychology is aimed at graduates of psychology programs and is also open to lateral entrants from social and economic science fields of study (details under admission requirements).

Asset Creation is a term used in the CG industry for the creation of all bits and pieces, both big and small, used in Film and Games. This Asset Creation program is designed to train working artists in the CG Industry for the roles of Props & Environments for Film, Characters & Creatures for Film, Environments for Games as well as Characters & Creatures for Games.

Prof. Dr. Jan-Henning Raff
Jan-Henning Raff studied Communication Design at Kunsthochschule Weißensee from 1995 to 2000. In 2013, Jan-Henning joined HMKW Berlin as a Professor of graphic design and visual communication and became Head of the Department of Design in 2014. His research focuses on the usage aspects of visual communication, and his focus is on communication in public spaces and interaction design.

Prof. Dr. Andine Muller
Designer of editorial design, events, exhibitions, and corporate design. Andine holds a doctorate in art and design from Bauhaus University Weimar. She joined HMKW in 2015 as a Graphic and Visual Communication instructor.

Prof. Dr. Bettina Gneisz Al-Ani
After studying political science in combination with history and journalism, Bettina completed a Ph.D. with summa cum laude and received the Doctoral Thesis Award. She joined HMKW and teaches Public Relations and Digital Marketing.

Prof. Dr. Markus Ziener
His career in journalism began with sports, and he has been a regular contributor to the magazine “European Affairs” published in Washington, DC. He worked at the Handelsblatt newspaper in Berlin as the head of the opinion department from 2012 to 2014, and now he teaches Digital Journalism at HMKW.
