Short courses in Fashion Styling provide participants with the principle techniques in creating contemporary images for fashion magazines and online media channels. Fashion stylists play a major role in the style and image of a fashion collection, brand or product.
Stylists work on the presentation of creative ideas and upcoming trends to produce successful visual communication proposals for magazine photo shoots, editorial and advertorial campaigns, for online brand promotion, or social media channels to name just a few.
Starting with theoretical concepts related to image, styling, photography and visual communication, participants are introduced to key notions and techniques in graphic design and photography, in creating and editing real photo shoots, as well as editorial styling proposals for magazines, blogs and social media. Participants also take a close look at marketing for fashion brands and learn how to apply visual communication skills to communicate the right image and message in order to create marketing proposals for a strong brand identity. To further enrich participants’ understanding and appreciation of this global, fast paced industry, cultural issues cover the history of art and dress, a brief history of photography and image, and the ‘fashion system’.
For personal enrichment and enjoyment, avocational courses are offered in a series of two (2) distinct levels ranging from a foundation introductory level, working through to a higher comprehension of skill and study. This enables a ‘flexible learning experience’ for participants to select and build on their own experience and personal achievement.

Weekly Breakdown
This course starts with an introduction to styling for the fashion industry, together with an overview of the ‘Fashion System’. Visual communication and presentation skills are introduced, alongside basic techniques in creative writing for print and online media proposals. The history of Art and Dress further supports participants’ understanding of style through key historic periods, as well as a basic history of fashion photography and iconographic research.
This course takes a look at fashion communication and image through digital media and social networks, including the influence and impact of social media on traditional communication processes. Participants are introduced to photo shoots, and to how style can be used to communicate a message or story. Skills in graphic design are further developed to create a personal blog supported by individual research.
By looking at both traditional marketing and digital marketing techniques this course explores the influence and power that a successful brand identity has on both the consumer, and the fashion industry. Participants will then have the opportunity to create and edit a real photo shoot in order to present a final editorial/advertorial piece that aims to communicate a particular story or message, image and style.
Photo shoots, on location and still-life sets are the natural environment of the fashion stylist. This course allows participants to work on their own photo shoot, coordinating photographer, lighting, model, props, hair and makeup, to name just a few. Images will be retouched and edited using professional editorial design software, and presented in a fashion styling research book of editorial examples as a record of their achievement.
